This piece moves through all three reflections

Misconception : What are we getting wrong about what makes life meaningful, and who benefits from that confusion?

Recommendation : What policy, institutional, design, or cultural change would help people thrive?

Radical vision : It's 2045. Something has shifted in how humans relate to each other and to themselves. What changed?

Forgotten to Remember

Misconception

I think what we’re getting wrong, is we’re not orienting our lives around meaning at all in the first place. We’ve FORGOTTEN about ‘meaning’, which is ironic, because the word itself has roots in the word, ‘meninge,’ which meant, ‘to express something’, but also, the ‘act of remembering’. So here we are, in this bizarre set-up having forgotten the act of remembering. Funny innit. Funny and heart-breaking actually…sort of like my favourite movies. Anyway, what instead seems to guide many of us, is an internal cacophony of lack, fear, and worry, manifesting on one end for ‘functional’ people, as competitiveness and drive. We may say we’re ‘ambitious’. On the other end, it manifests for some as crippling anxiety, panic attacks, and depression. We may think we’re ‘crazy’. And of course, people can oscillate between the two, sometimes over the course of years, and at others, over the course of an hour. So, why did we forget to remember, and who does it benefit? Big Pharma comes to mind. Media moguls maybe? Cash-rich, heart-poor billionaires? Your day to day snake oil salesman? Who knows. All I know is that WE don’t, and actually in the end, neither will they.

Recommendation

I couldn’t think of only one change to help people thrive, so I’m going to throw out a bunch of words. Movement. Education. Nature. Real food. Sleep hygiene. Dance. Touch. Play. Soil. Healing. Trauma education. Trees. Interdependence. Communication skills. Feeling. Togetherness. Okay, that’s enough. Now we can mix that all in a big blender, and pour it over everything from the macro to the micro; the globe, societies, families, and individuals. BOOM! Vamos a ver.

Radical vision

Society, and ourselves no longer demand such a fast-paced over exertion of our minds and bodies. As a result, we notice things. We feel sensations in our somas, and how they’re moved by our relationships. We give ourselves permission to sleep enough, so we don’t need the hormones of stress, anger, competition, and addiction to stay awake. We begin to embody the proverb, “A bit of fragrance clings to the hand that gives flowers”, so we organically do more good than bad. Conflict still arises, but more and more we notice how when we’re open, communicate from the heart, and resolve conflict peacefully, we feel lighter in our bodies, more joyful, and connected. So naturally, we continue handing each other roses left, right, and centre! So many roses! Thus, it no longer smells like shit! The END.
